Should I Get a Cold Air Intake
A lot of guys that don’t know much about gasoline engines, let alone modifying them, know that the more air you can get in and back out of the motor, the more horsepower it will make. Common sense tells you that this process can happen quicker if the air is able to pass through easier. Pertaining to automobiles, replacing the air filter is one of the things you do to regularly maintain the life of the engine.
Most auto manufacturers recommend you replace the air filter ever 10,000 miles or so to keep the air flowing freely, thus keeping your engine running smoothly. In fact, if you don’t replace your air filter regularly you will probably notice a decrease in both power and gas mileage.
When it comes to modifying a motor, meaning get more horsepower, one of the first replacements most people make are the parts that allow and/or restrict air flow. Those parts are the air filter (air going in) and the exhaust system (air going out). Upgrading your air filter to a cold air intake is much easier than replacing your OEM exhaust system. When you replace the air filter with an aftermarket unit or a cold air setup, the average time is around 15-20 minutes when you have the proper tools readily available. When you decide to replace your factory exhaust with an aftermarket one, plan on about 3 hours or so. Bottom line is, if you cheap, almost instant power; go for a cold air intake first!
Before you run out and buy the first cold air intake you see, make sure it doesn’t void any warranty, will throw and error codes or annoy your girlfriend. The last thing you want to do is make girls not want to ride in your Honda Civic; you’ll have a tough enough time as it is. And except the signature ‘growl’ when you stomp on that gas, which is rather pleasing to some and annoying to others. There are alternative to the cold air intake if you want improved air flow; enter the K&N air filter. The K&N air filter fits in your factory air box, increases air flow and doesn’t even require you to remove any OEM parts.
