Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) are riding high on the success of their utility vehicles and this is probably the inspiration that drives M&M to keep innovating and provide new accessories in its already existing models. The biggest success story for Mahindra came with Scorpio. In addition the Bolero and Xylo have accelerated Mahindra to new levels of success. As of October, in 2009, the combined sales of its three models — Scorpio, Bolero and Xylo — went up to 18,410. This gives M&M a whopping 65% share of the Indian utility vehicle market.
These three vehicles have come across as one of the safest vehicles to drive with built in safety features like collapsible steering, crumple zones and ABS. M&M continues on the path of innovation and safety with the introduction of airbags in Scorpio and Xylo. Let’s have a look at how the airbags in the Scorpio and Xylo can be crucial in saving your life in an accident.
Airbags in cars provide cushioning effect during collisions by automatically inflating on impact. The design of the airbag mechanism is conceptually simple. It is made of three general components:
- The airbag module
- Crash Sensors &
- The deployment mechanism
The airbag module includes both an inflator unit and a light weight nylon fabric airbag. Originally, airbags were installed only on the driver’s side in the steering. Eventually, airbags became standard on both the driver and passenger side to protect from impacting directly into the steering wheel or the windshield in case of an impact. The module may also contain The diagnostic unit which monitors the readiness of the air bag system and warns to repair the system in case of a failure.
Air bags are typically designed to deploy in frontal and near-frontal collisions when there is rapid deceleration of the vehicle. The airbag sensor is a MEMS accelerometer. The microscopic mechanical element moves in response to rapid deceleration, and this motion causes a change in capacitance, which is detected by the electronics on the chip, which then sends a signal to fire the airbag.
When there is a moderate to severe frontal crash that requires the frontal air bag to deploy, a signal is sent to the inflator unit within the air bag module. An igniter starts a chemical reaction, which produces a gas to fill the air bag, making the air bag deploy through the module cover.
This simple mechanism can go a long way in saving your precious life and Mahindra understands that. Mahindra has made sure that Scorpio’s and Xylo’s success never dies out by making thoughtful changes and innovations with every new variant. The introduction of Airbags is an all-important variation.
